When you need this
You're a start official at a race and need to see who's coming to the start line next — or you're a participant wanting to quickly check your own start time on a shared device. Start List Mode shows all assigned start times and participants grouped by time slot, with the ability to make quick edits like updating chip numbers or marking no-shows.
Entering Start List Mode
From the event list, tap the event you want to view. A menu appears with the available modes. Tap Start List to open the start list view.
Start List Mode is only available when the event has registrations with assigned start times. If no start times have been set (in the desktop client's registration manager), the mode won't appear in the menu.
Once open, the screen shows the event name in the header and the full list of participants organized by start time below.
Reading the start list
The screen displays participants grouped by their start time. Each time slot shows the scheduled start time (HH:MM) as a header, followed by the participants starting at that time.
For each participant you see:
- Name — the participant's full name
- Class — which class they're running in
- Bib number — their assigned race number
The list is sorted chronologically, so the earliest start times appear at the top. Scroll down to see later start slots. If multiple participants share the same start time (common in mass-start classes or relay legs), they all appear under the same time header.
The data shown here comes directly from the registrations configured in the desktop client. Any last-minute changes to start times made on the desktop are reflected here once the data syncs.
Using it at the start area
You're managing the start and runners keep asking "when do I start?" Instead of flipping through paper lists, you open Start List Mode and scroll to the current time. You can see at a glance who should be at the start line now, who's next, and whether anyone is missing.
This pairs well with having another device running Start Clock for the actual countdown — Start List Mode on a second device (or printed) serves as the reference while Start Clock handles the timing.
Quick editing participants
Tap any participant in the list to open a quick edit panel. From here you can:
- Update chip number — if a participant arrives with a different chip than registered, update it here so the timing system recognizes them
- Change start time — adjust the participant's start time if they need to move to a different slot
- Mark as DNS — mark a participant as "Did Not Start" if they don't show up for their start time
- Revert DNS — if you marked someone as DNS by mistake, tap them again and restore their "Registered" status
Changes are saved immediately and sync to the server.
Settings
Tap the menu icon to open Start List settings:
- Auto scroll — When enabled, the list automatically scrolls to show participants whose start time is approaching. This keeps the current starters visible without manual scrolling.
- Pre-start — How many minutes ahead of real time to highlight. Works the same as in Start Clock mode — shows which participants should be called to the prestart area.
- Start place — Filter which start places to show (only appears when the event has multiple start places). Use this when you're managing one specific start place and only want to see participants relevant to your location.
Scenario: Start official at a club race
You're the start official at a Saturday morning orienteering race with 60 participants. Runners start at 1-minute intervals beginning at 10:00. You have two phones: one running Start Clock for the countdown beeps, and one showing Start List Mode so you can call runners forward.
- Open Start List Mode on the second phone and scroll to 10:00
- At 09:58, you see the first three starters listed — call them to the pre-start area
- As each minute passes, glance at the list to confirm the next runner is present
- At 10:12, you notice the runner listed for that slot hasn't appeared — tap their name and mark them as DNS so the system knows they didn't start
- Between busy periods, scroll ahead to see if any start slots have multiple runners (mass start groups) so you can prepare
The list stays on screen with auto-scroll keeping the current time visible. Tap any participant for quick edits when needed.
Printing start lists
You need paper start lists for the start officials, or a PDF to share with the team. Open the settings menu and tap Print start lists.
You'll first choose the list type:
- Start list by classes — one page per class, showing all participants in that class sorted by start time. Useful for posting at the start area so runners can find their class.
- Start list by minutes — all participants sorted by start minute, showing who starts at each time regardless of class. Useful for the start official who needs to know who's next.
After choosing the type, you can optionally filter:
- For "by classes": select which classes to include (leave empty for all)
- For "by minutes": select which start places to include (leave empty for a combined list). Selecting specific starts prints each one on a separate page with a header.
Tap PDF to generate the document. The Android share sheet opens, letting you save, print, or send the PDF.
Tips
- Tap a participant to quickly update their chip number or start time — useful for last-minute changes at the start area.
- Use the DNS button when a participant doesn't show up. This updates their status across the system immediately.
- If a participant doesn't appear in the list, they either haven't been registered or don't have a start time assigned yet.
- Enable auto scroll to keep the current time slot visible without manual scrolling — especially useful during busy start periods.
- Use the start place filter when managing one of several start locations, so you only see participants relevant to your position.
- For large events, the prestart offset helps you see who should be called to the prestart area next.
- This mode uses minimal battery since there's no reader connection or active timing — it's safe to leave open on a spare device at the start area all day.
