When you need this
You've just installed the Navisport mobile app on your Android device and need to configure it for your timing role — or you're switching between events and need to change the reader type or device name.
General settings
Device name
The device name identifies your phone or tablet in the desktop admin panel. When multiple devices are connected to the same event (e.g. one at the start, one at the finish), the device name tells the event organizer which device is which.
Choose a descriptive name like "Finish line tablet" or "Start official phone" so it's easy to identify in the checkpoint list.
Language
Switch the app interface between Finnish, English, Swedish, and Norwegian. This changes all menus, labels, and messages throughout the app.
Theme
Toggle between light and dark mode. Dark mode reduces eye strain in low-light conditions — useful for early morning starts or evening events.
Clock
Displays the current synchronized time. Tap the clock to trigger a manual time sync. Accurate time is critical for timing — the app synchronizes automatically, but you can force a sync if you suspect drift.
Activity log
Tap Show logs to open the activity log viewer. The log records every timing operation the app performs:
- Chip reads (successful and failed)
- Results saved and sent to the server
- Participant registrations
- Sync messages and connection status changes
The log is invaluable for troubleshooting. If a result seems missing or a chip read didn't register, check the log to see exactly what happened and when. Each entry includes a timestamp so you can correlate with the participant's account of events.
You can search within the log, send individual entries to the server for review, or send all logs at once for the event organizer to analyze.
Reader type
Select the hardware reader connected to your device:
- EMIT USB — standard EMIT reader connected via USB OTG cable
- EMIT ECB/ETS — EMIT base station (ECB) or timing station (ETS)
- SportIdent SRR — SportIdent short-range radio reader
- Huichang USB — Huichang timing reader via USB
Change this when you switch between reader hardware. The app needs to know which protocol to use for communication.
Sound
Enable or disable speech announcements. When enabled, the app uses text-to-speech to announce participant names and results aloud (primarily used in Automaton and Start Clock modes). Chip read confirmation beeps always play regardless of this setting.
App actions
Logout
Signs you out of the current Navisport account. Use this when handing the device to another organization or switching between accounts.
Close app
Fully closes the application. In normal operation you can simply leave the app running — but if you need to free resources or restart fresh, use this option rather than force-closing from the system.
Tips
- Set the device name before connecting to an event — it's how the desktop operator identifies your checkpoint.
- Sync the clock at the start of each event day, especially if the device was powered off overnight.
- Check the activity log if a participant claims they read their chip but no result appeared — the log shows whether the read was received.
- Dark mode can extend battery life on OLED screens during long event days.
- If you switch reader hardware mid-event (e.g. replacing a faulty cable), remember to update the reader type setting — mismatched protocols cause silent read failures.
- The device name is visible to the desktop event monitor in real time, so keep it meaningful for multi-device setups.
